The allure of sliding glass doors is in the way they make the outdoors feel part of the interior – but open sightlines does not mean your home is any less secure.
Quality sliding doors will, in fact, boast security as a major feature with manufacturers knowing that feeling secure is the most important factor for homeowners.
Technology has advanced rapidly in the construction of glass and sliding glass door systems – and rather than a fragile material, modern glass is tough and built to last.
Security in glass sliding door systems – what to look for
There are two hugely important factors to look for when considering an aluminium sliding door system’s security. These are PAS 24 and Part Q accreditation, which both attest to the quality of the doors and confirm they have met – or exceeded – certain industry standards.
Both of these standards are designed to improve the security of buildings and help to reduce the prospect of a property being broken into.
All of Sightline’s aluminium sliding doors meet this security standard, giving the customer peace of mind that their property is as secure as possible.

What does PAS 24:2016 mean?
PAS 24 is an industry standard that shows a complete product, rather than individual features, has passed a series of security tests.
Rather than grading one product as superior to another, products either pass or fail the test – meaning that many products that pass the test may actually have enhanced features.
To ensure the validity of testing it is carried out by a third-party and must be UKAS accredited. UKAS is the United Kingdom Accreditation Service – the national body responsible ensuring that standards are tested properly.
The PAS 24 test will include the durability of a glass door when tested against pressure and weight – such as a sharp object and a heavy object to judge how it will withstand an attempted security breach by a potential criminal.
It will also test the resilience of locks to pressure and other potentially vulnerable points.
What is Part Q?
Since 2015, Part Q accreditation has added another level to security checks for sliding door systems and other points of access that are within 2 metres reach of a flat surface.
Part Q is a Building Regulation that has been introduced to cut the incidence of break-ins at domestic properties by setting a standard for parts of a home that could be used to gain access, such as windows and doors.
The guidance, which applies to all new build properties, lays out a number of security measures that must be met to help to prevent unauthorised access into a property.
With these tests and accreditations in place sliding door systems will meet the standards required by the police organisation Secured by Design, which was set up specifically to reduce crime by improving the security of buildings.
It is essential that any sliding door has met these standards to give you confidence in the security of your home.
